Jon Imhof, a surfer from Hawaii, came to Queenstown to go snowboarding and he liked Queenstown so much that he decided to stay for summer. Missing the waves of the ocean, he looked for an alternative and came up with the crazy idea to follow the rafters down the Shotover River and surf waves on his bodyboard. Although the rapids were great, he found it was too shallow and decided to go down the Kawarau River instead, and the sport of riversurfing was born.

In 1989, with riversurfing in high demand, Jon established Serious Fun Riversurfing, the original riversurfing company. A few year later, after looking for other suitable locations around the world, he started a sister company on the Zambezi in 1995. A few years after that, some of the African guides took the sport up to the White Nile in Uganda, and to this day, these are the only three places in the world you can go riversurfing!

Because we are licensed to operate on two sections of the river, we can choose between them to make sure we give you the best trip on the river for the conditions. As we have no control over the weather, we cannot promise we will be running a specific section at all times during the season.
Lower water section < 200 cms – Chinese Dog Leg – 8 km Section graded 2-4
Higher water section > 200 cms – Roaring Meg – 6 km Section graded 2-3 – run twice

Please meet us at Serious Fun shop on 39 Camp Street 15 minutes before the trip. We can also pick you up from your Hotel/Backpackers. Please tell your booking agency where you would like to be picked up.

About Walnut Cottage

History

Built in 1870 and named after the giant 100-year-old walnut tree behind it, Walnut Cottage has had a long and illustrious history. Initially the office for a local flour mill before being transformed into the local post office, the cottage then became the residence for local legend “Wagoner Jack,” one of the last “old wagoners”, from 1942 until his death in 1991.

Walnut Cottage has since been restored by Jack’s son, Noel Stevenson and his wife Alma. The couple sold a variety of arts and crafts from the cottage as well as historical items.

Walnut Cottage was later turn into a cafe and is now owned and operated by Wakatipu locals Rick and Dini Siddick.

The People

Rick and Dini Siddick took over the running of Walnut Cottage at the end of 2010. Once the youngest restaurateur in New Zealand, Rick brings a wealth of skill and experience to the cosy Arrowtown cafe as well some special new dishes.

Cruising on the “Lady of the Lake” is like stepping back in time.

Below deck, the steam engines hiss and thud as the stokers shovel coal into the glowing fireboxes. In the wheelhouse upstairs, the skipper rings through directions to the engine room using the traditional telegraph bells - the same method used on board a century ago.

A 1 ½ hour cruise on the TSS Earnslaw showcases some of Lake Wakatipu’s most beautiful alpine scenery and allows plenty of time to explore the decks and bridge. Visit the engine room, view the collection of historical photos in the Fo’c’sle gallery or join a sing-along with the onboard pianist.

The vessel has a licensed café onboard selling a selection of café-style food as well as beer, wine and spirits.

Cruises depart regularly throughout the day. You can choose to complete a cruise only, or a cruise, combined with a visit to Walter Peak High Country Farm for a guided farm tour, horse trek, heritage excursion, barbecue lunch or evening dining.
